Promote greater participation of citizens in the recycling process, through direct rewards for dropping off aluminium and PET plastic containers up to 3 litres. Under this premise, the project “MAFRA Reciclar a Valer +” (Mafra Recycling for Real+) was developed, a pilot project that culminated with an event held at the Ecological and Intermodal Park of Venda do Pinheiro. The initiative brought together representatives of the partner institutions, who carried out an evaluation of the project and presented the results: more than 2.5 million packages were collected, representing a quantity of more than 71 tons of recycled material.
The event marks the conclusion of this project, which was funded with 756.000 euros from the EUA Grants Portugal environmental program, the multi-year funding mechanism between the European Economic Area and Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
Since April the 27th 2021, the project “MAFRA Reciclar a Valer +“, promoted by the Municipality of Mafra, has offered 12 take-back systems for empty beverage containers. This initiative has also ensured that the existing facilities in the municipality of Mafra continue to be available to the population: Artur Patrocínio Primary School – Azueira; São Miguel do Milharado Primary School; Escola Básica n. Primary School No. 1 in Venda do Pinheiro; Primary School of the municipalities of Igreja Nova and Cheleiros; Primary School of the municipality of Santo Isidoro and Primary School of the municipality of Encarnação; Lidl stores in Mafra, Ericeira and Malveira; Pingo Doce stores in Mafra and Malveira; Minipreço in Ericeira.
To raise awareness of the issue among the population, awareness campaigns were conducted in schools and shopping centres and surveys were conducted at Instituto Superior Técnico events during this period.
For the upcoming 2022/2023 school year, a school championship developed by Tratolixo with the support of the city council is planned, with awards for the schools with the best results (more information will be announced soon).

In addition to the Mafra City Council, the project involves Electrão and Novo Verde, companies responsible for packaging waste management and helping to implement the collection equipment in the municipality, Tratolixo, where the waste collected in the various equipment provided will be delivered, and Instituto Superior Técnico and 3drivers, who will help monitor and evaluate this solution.
